'Flying Childers' with Jockey Up

Description

Childers was a bay colt bred by Leonard Childers of Carr House, Doncaster in 1715 and owned by the Duke of Devonshire. Between 1721 and 1723, he won three of his six matches and forfeited the remainder. He was famed for his speed and gained the nickname ‘Flying Childers’. He died at the Duke’s stud in 1741 aged 26. James Seymour was one of a number of leading artists of the period to paint Childers along with John Wootton and Thomas Spencer.
