Description
John Gully (1783-1863) was Champion 1807-1808. His btucher’s business failed and he was imprisioned for debt. Unable to find opponents, Pearce as champion sparred with Gully in the prison. Impressed with his ability Pearce persuaded some wealthy sportsmen to settle Gully’s debts and arranged the match at Hailsham. After Pearce’s retirement Gully disputed the championship with Bob Gregson at Six Mile Bottom on 14th October 1807. Though injured Gully was the victor. He triumphed again when the pair met in May 1808. After retiring from the ring Gully prospered as a bookmaker and racehorse owner, winning the Derby and St Leger in 1832. In the same year he became MP for Pontefract.
