King George IV: Patronage and Reputation
Lecturer: Steven Parissien.
CEO Palace House

George Augustus, Prince of Wales (1762-1830), Prince Regent (1811-20) and King of England (1820-30) defined an era. This most magnificent of British monarchs assembled an unrivalled collection of art, much of which remains in the Royal Collection today, and built or rebuilt many of the royal residencies which are still in daily use. He also patronized an astonishingly wide range of cultural and sporting recreations.

This lecture, which is designed to accompany both The Royal Collection’s major new

London exhibition on George IV and the Palace House’s Newmarket exhibition King George IV: Royalty, Racing and Reputation, examines George’s cultural and sporting patronage and how this patronage – whether of artists or racehorses – fashioned his undeniably colourful and controversial reputation.
