Since 2010 Chris Stride, a founder of the Sporting Statues Project, has been recording the Sporting Statues of the World. He has published several academic papers and magazine articles, and collected information on over 1000 statues. Chris Stride will talk about the project and the rapid increase in the commissioning of statues to commemorate sporting celebrities. Some are more successful than others. Whether you agree that Sporting Statues are absolutely art, or not, it’s clear that they are an important part of our sporting heritage, and provide a permanent link to the UK’s sporting past for our communities and for generations of sports fans to come.
